Nice guy Dave joins me on this podcast to talk about the recent 'Aerial Rescue Challenge' competition/event that was the brainchild of Dave with the backing from Wesspur.

Dan shares his experiences from a competitior, and Dave shares his thought about the organization and what he saw througout the weekend.
We also talk about the systems we had to use during the competition, always being on two indepentent climbing systems (or using a backup), and when and how this might become the standard in arboriculture.

Episode 13 - With Kevin Bingham, inventor of the rope wrench
Kevin Bingham is most well known in the industry for the invention of the rope wrench and then the rope runner that followed. It can be argued that Kevin single handedly evolved tree climbing as arborists know it today with the invention of the rope wench. Before the wrench arborists would use SRT for accessing the tree only (with the exception of a few using the Unicender for SRT). The rope wrench has certainly changed climbing for the masses, and many products & techniques have come about because single rope work positioning is now possible.
In this episode Kevin talks about how the idea of climbing on a stationary rope came about, and seemed more efficient for a specific job, and how this got him thinking about how to create a device to solve the problem (7:10), Treemagineers giving Kevin the idea for the stiff tether attempting to use it in competition climbing (41:50), inventing the rope runner and using the local makerspace (54:50), climbing on 2 separate climbing lines simultaneously (1:14:45), using a lanyard for good work positioning and not being lazy by using 1 hand on the chainsaw (1:28:55), climbing at the 2019 ITCC in Knoxville (1:35:25).

With joint objectives of improving safety and efficiency in professional tree care, the products they create are the result of close innovative cooperation with hardware manufacturer DMM and fibre specialist Teufelberger. Treemagineers have designed the Treemotion harness, hitch climber pulley, the captain hook, multisling and much more... Mark is also the founding member of the tree care co-op 'Baumpartner' and the training company 'Baumklettern Schweiz'. Member of BSB and ISA work safety committees. Previous ITCC Competitor and two time ETCC Champion. In this podcast Mark talks about how he was introduced to the arb industry, his mentors, climbing on 3 strand rope and getting his first 16-strand rope (5:45), the evolution of climbers and how climbers today may miss out on a lot of valuable ‘older’ techniques (22:30), starting his tree care co-op company ‘Baumpartner’ and as a co-op they have made it work over the long term (34:40), time pressures in tree work coming from the top down (45:00), how Tremagineers began, and it’s journey over the last 15-20 years (59:00), rigging research and rigging to points of failure (1:25:00), ETCC (1:55:00), A funny experience in Finland (2:06:00).
Episode 11 - With Dan Holliday
Dan goes solo on this podcast after giving a couple of presentation on the topic of safe use of chainsaws in the canopy and good work positioning. This subject is one that Dan is very passionate about, and is also one that causes many disagreements among arborists, employees and employers. Arboriculture as an industry has an extremely high incident and injury rate compared to most other industries. The reason being is, there are so many risks that we are faced with in the industry, but the majority of these risks can be mitigated. So why is it that when it comes to see of the more serious risks like cutting ourselves with chainsaws or falling from height, that many people are willing to take chances and expose themselves to more of a risk than is necessary. There are so many people that can and will be affected by an injury, family, friends, co-workers etc, some of these people depend on you, would you really want to put them in a situation were you depend on the for physical, emotional and financial support? Once you have listened to this podcast, please take my challenge of trying 2 hands on the chainsaw and 2 Tie in points for 6 weeks, I promise you, you will make huge strides in the way you climb, and become a much better, safer and more efficient climber because of it. If you like this episode, please tell a friend, colleague, employer, share on your social media, and even send me an email letting me know what you think and if you have any questions (email can be found on climbingarborist.com). Thank you for listening, you can subscribe to us on YouTube, iTunes, Stitcher, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and of course keep up to date with the industry on ClimbingArborist.com . Climb safe….. Work safe……..
